This checklist is for routine inspection. It is not a guarantee of storm protection. Follow manufacturer instructions, your association's rules and local emergency guidance.
Before hurricane season
- Find every shutter panel, fastener and tool, and confirm they're labeled by opening
- Check panels for bends, cracks and missing pieces
- Check wing nuts, bolts and anchors are all present and not corroded
- Operate accordion and roll-down shutters fully; listen for grinding
- Check tracks are clean and not bent
- Photograph shutters and hardware for your records and insurer
After a storm
- Photograph shutters before removing them
- Look for bent panels, pulled anchors and damaged tracks
- Store panels and hardware together, labeled
- Note any water intrusion inside and report it
What a handyman can help with
Installing and removing panels, cleaning and lubricating tracks, replacing missing fasteners, and adjusting accordion shutters are common handyman tasks. Damaged anchors in block walls, structural damage and new shutter systems generally need a licensed contractor and may need a permit.
